MORTLACH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 20, 2008
Minutes of the December meeting were read and adopted by Marcia; Sylvie seconded; carried.
Treasurer’s Report - Bank Balance $ 8,304.82; the balance has been paid to the town for the sidewalk construction

Old Business
1. Larry Hiles’ Presentation – noon February 23rd; $10.00 registration fee
2. Historic Plaques – cost of 4 plaques would be 2,020.70 which includes shipping
3. Small “Meet Me in Mortlach” ads – Sylvie reported
- 1 year ad every week in the classified section of the Sunday Times = $25.20 per week;
$1,310.40 for a year
-3 months (12 weeks consecutive) = $26.60 per week; $319.20 for 12 weeks- Motion Ken to purchase ads for 12 consecutive weeks in May June, and July to advertise Mortlach events; Sandi seconded; carried.
4. Donation to School Newsletter – no report
5. Website Status – Sylvie reported 3,000+ visitors from all over the world
6. Robbie Burns Night – Ron reported that the library made $749.00 so they will be able to fund
the extra hour starting Saturday February 23rd; 65 people attended including our MLA Lyle
Stewart.
7. Walking Trail Proposal – Sylvie reported; we won’t apply for the grant this year; we will
work on a trail north of the rink and thru the orchard in the spring keeping it really simple.
Committee Reports
1. Welcome Wagon – there are 4 new families to visit.
2. Mortlach Wellness Committee- Krista reported
-Winter Carnival was a success; 100 people attended; fun
events for all ages, but they would like to have some new ideas for next year; at the
rink worked good; next year teams could be made as people arrive.
Thank you to Anita Stettner and Claude Lessard for supplying the maple syrup for the
winter carnival.
-The RCMP have more manpower out of Moose Jaw now and are planning on being part of community events. There is an RCMP grant available that can be applied for and used to engage youth and keep them busy.
3. Events Committee/Fund Raising – no report
4. Infrastructure – no report
5. Museum – Mrs Hall reported that their fund raiser on February 9 was successful; the auction
raised $3,000.00; bank balance = $8,191.61.
6. Seniors – Mrs. Hall reported that Telemiracle will be receiving $550.00 raised at their
afternoon tea and program today.
7. Pioneer machinery – no report; no status on demos for the Saskatoon Berry Festival
New Business
1. Farmers’ Market for 2008 – Karla reported
-Farmers’ Markets will be held Thursday evenings starting July 10 and going through until the Thanksgiving weekend in October; 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.; at the Mortlach Hall.
- They are asking businesses to stay open later on Thursday evenings
- Local people will have first chance to be vendors; if people are not committing Karla will be contacting people from other centres; no duplication of vendors of franchised businesses.
- Vendor membership will be $25.00 and $5.00 each Thursday they are there.
- Needs advertising, village map, sign on the highway, a treasurer…
- Could include entertainment
- Saskatchewan Farmers’ Market Association has a “badge” that could be added to the highway sign and we would be listed on their website.
- Motion Karla that a sum not exceeding $200.00 be applied to promotion and advertising for the Farmers’ Market; Bev seconded; carried.
2. Development – 21 new residential lots and 3 industrial sites (@ 5 acres are under
construction; lots are selling at cost of services + 10% - approximately $10,000, 100 feet x
125 feet.
3. Trailer Factory – still in discussion with manufacturer; could bring 14 jobs; could use 2
industrial sites.
4. SPRA Spring Education and Training Symposium – no interest
5. Historic Village/Actors – Sylvie reported
- Federal government grant is available for summer jobs for students – 30 to 40 hours per week for 6 weeks; 15 years and older
- Students could man a tourist booth, and be Mortlach historians playing the roles of early settlers, guiding walking tours (ie Historic Plaques), and explaining Mortlach history (ie Mile 0 on the French Trail)
- Sylvie and Ken would mentor and supervise the students
- Sylvie and Ken have an old building that could be moved and used for the tourist booth; the bunk houses on wheels that Larry Forbes has was also a suggestion. It would be placed someplace in the downtown area.
6. Communities in Bloom - Motion Sandi to enter Mortlach in the Communities in Bloom
competition 2008 costing $200.00; Ken seconded; carried.
- Ron will do the application.
7. Saskatoon Berry Festival
- film festival, music festival, first nations dancers, parade, pancake breakfast, games for kids, T shirts; parade coordinator is Penny Cummings
- Some vendors have been contacted – to rent a space is $20.00 until April 5th after that date the rental fee will be $30.00.
- Rhonda and Marilyn will work on Sponsor letters
- Rhonda (chair of the MCDA Events Committee) will call the next meeting that will include representatives from both MCDA and the business community.
8. MRAA – Mortlach Riding Arena Association - Krista reported
-They held a Town Hall meeting February 10th that 40 people attended.
-They are hoping to draw in as many people as possible , keep the cost reasonable
and have fun.
- May 23,2008 is their kick off date and they have 11 events planned for the year.
9. Penny’s Wellness SCRAPA Grant Activities - Square Dance Class, Hip Hop, Victorian Lamp
