MORTLACH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY JANUARY 16, 2008

Old Business
1. Marj will write a cheque to the Village for $6, 417.00 to finish paying MCDA’s share of the
interlocking brick sidewalk around and south of the library/post office building.
2. Name the “New Building” Contest – notices are up around town for this contest; $50.00
prize; contest ends February 29th.
3. Small Ad in Moose jaw Times Herald – Sylvie reported
- A small ad in the Sunday Times weekly (Classified Ads Section) would cost: $30.00 + gst
And for 3 months it would cost $26.00 + gst per week.
- A small ad in the Moose Jaw Times Herald weekly (Classified Ads Section) would cost: $22.00 and $31.00 for 3 months
- Discussion – once a week for 3 months maybe isn’t long enough; 6 months to a year would be better; Sylvie will do further research.
4. Donation to School Newsletter – Kelly reported
- As of January 1, 2008 the cost for a page advertisement = $10.00/ half page = $5.00
- Kelly is to talk to Karen Buck and find out what the cost to print and distribute one month’s newsletter; we would pay one time for our information to be included each month.
5. Larry Hiles – Marilyn reported
- February 23rd; 1:00 pm; at the hall
- He will review our starting point, our process – what we’ve done, where we are now, and what we want to achieve in community and economic development.
6. Website Report - Sylvie reported
- 1600 + visitors – in the last 10 days, from Saskatchewan, Ontario, British Columbia, Winnipeg, Montreal, Fredericton, New Brunswick, Calgary, Edmonton, Coaldale AB, Texas, New York, California, Korea, UK, Italy
- Visitors have come via other links – like Sask Biz, Dana & Gilles wedding; people find Mortlach when searching for Young Seeds, Mortlach Fiddlers, Wagons West Cookhouse; One person googled ‘best place to live in Saskatchewan’ and found our site – he/she was from Saudi Arabia
Committee Reports
1. Welcome Wagon – Marilyn reported there are 4 or 5 families to visit and Sue has been
making baskets.
2. Mortlach Wellness Committee – February 18th Family Winter Carnival; 9:00 am to 1:00 pm
Ron reported
- Next planning meeting for the February 18th winter Carnival will be January 31st; 6:00 pm at the school.
- Pancake breakfast, sporting events, ice sculptoring, making maple syrup suckers
- List of teams in the post office
3. Events/Fund Raising – Ron reported; Robbie Burns Night January 25th; tickets @ $25.00;
sold 30 out of 80 tickets; Lyle Stewart is coming.
4. Infrastructure – no report
5. Museum – Joan reported; Bank Balance = $ 4, 736.00; some money was received in memory
of Walter and Lena Felt.
- February 9th – Fund Raiser – Bingo, Penny Parade, Dessert Auction and musical selections by Mike and Sue Franklyn; starts at 6:30 pm; at the Hall
6. Seniors – Mrs. Hall reported
- February 20th – 2:00 pm - Seniors are sponsoring their annual Telemiracle afternoon; Keith and Lori Hall and Kallie Bossence (Chair people for Telemiracle 31 for the provincial presentation) will be attending.
- The Seniors request food hamper donations and bake table donations; Kinsmen will be available to take Telemiracle donations as well.
7. Pioneer Machinery – We asked Rupert to take back a request for machinery demonstrations
and/or information at the July 5th Festival.
New Business
1. Review Mission Statement - What does “build community “ mean?
- Have services and events that people enjoy; good friendly place to live where people interact a lot; encourage individualism; communication – getting information in and out; bringing people together to enjoy events and physically improve our community; it identifies, funds, and implements projects designed to beautify, to promote, and to enhance the community making Mortlach and rural area an attractive place to live and to own businesses; welcomes newcomers thus encourages people to come to Mortlach; facilities and businesses have changed and improved; “this is the place for us” and for 27 other new families have said that too in 2007; atmosphere that allows town to thrive and attract residents and children for our school; values positive relationships between people; 2 complimenting themes – Mortlach Community and Economic Development Association; community that has Fiddlers can’t be all that bad – let’s have a look; good foundation to attract people – people don’t feel left out and we are strong in our unity; not afraid of growth – ie businesses and people; there are jobs; feels like home…
- Motion Bev to reduce the Notice of Motion spending limit from $5,000.00 to $2500.00; seconded Sylvie; carried.
- Revisions for 2008 will be printed in a different font and different color.
2. Winter Carnival – request for Funding
Motion Ken to donate a sum not exceeding $500.00 to the Mortlach Wellness Committee to
purchase supplies for the Winter Carnival on February 18th; seconded Rose; carried.
3. Mortlach Historic Plaques
- Sites suggested – firehall/jail; CPR train station site; former Village Office/Meat Market (presently the Sweet Shoppe); Vimy Park; elevators
- People suggested – Fred Lahrman, George Stephen; Walter Felt
- Ron will contact the previous supplier for a cost estimate
4. Saskatoon Berry Folk Festival – Sylvie reported
- New Event for the Festival – Film Festival – contact Sylvie if you have a film to enter this event.
- Update on Festival Planning
- one feature band from Saskatoon and other performers have been contacted
- PFRA representative will be attending to provide information about the orchard
- Advertising needs to be done in Sask. Tourism magazines
- Festival Budget
- Sponsors – Prairie Berry donated $1000.00 and a percentage of money from selling pies
and berries

- Motion Sylvie to provide the Saskatoon Berry Festival Planning Committee a sum not exceeding $2, 000.00 for an operating budget as working capital required for planning the Saskatoon Berry Festival; seconded Rose; carried.
5. Senior Housing – There are grants available for home adaptations to make homes
more accessible so that Seniors remain independent and in their own homes.
6. Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association Inc. – Spring Education and Training
Symposium April 13 – 17 at Humbolt, Saskatchewan; Mobilizing Volunteers – Support
for your Greenspaces.
- Looking for presenters: Presenters are required to deliver a 20 minute presentation on how their community recruits and uses volunteers to maintain parks /green spaces. They are also asked to contribute to a panel discussion with other presenters.
- Reply by January 25th.
7. Haskaps – a bush developed by the University of Saskatchewan that is like a honeysuckle
with blueberry shaped berries (that are edible – they taste like a blueberry); there is an empty
row in the orchard which would hold 50 of them.
Motion Ray to purchase 50 Haskaps plants costing $393.00 + shipping; seconded Rose
