MORTLACH COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT and AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY (MCDAS)
MEETING HELD ON WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2009
Marcia read the highlights from minutes of the November Meeting.
Marcia moved minutes of the November meeting adopted as read; Rose seconded; carried.
Treasurer’s Report – Bank Balance = $11, 819.01

Correspondence – none
Old Business
1. Kirby Criddle and Mark Cesear – MCDAS donated Kirby and Mark $100.00, and they in turn made a
donation to the Dylan Koshman Search Fund.
2. Artist in Residence – awaiting outcome of developmental phase application
3. Ag Society – the Directors’ Report was sent in before the end of December – we have not found
anyone to review the treasurer’s books.
4. Robbie Burns Dinner cancelled; library hours will likely reduce back to 11 hours; Ron suggested that
maybe MCDAS could take this event on as a project next year.
5. Christmas Train – successful; 134 lbs of food was taken to Moose Jaw Food Bank from Mortlach
6. Sparkle Up – successful; profit = $810.00
7. Highway Signs – slow progress
8. New Directors – MCDAS requires 3 new directors – tabled until February meeting
9. Festival Workshop – December 13th at Shekinah Retreat Centre – Marcia read a report
• Common theme to all the community festivals is volunteer participation. Pay it Forward – we help provide volunteers for a neighbouring festival and they return the gesture with volunteers sent to our festival the following year.
New Business
1. Winter Carnival – Report (Krista Bakke) – February 22, 2009 – activities to build family
• Pancake Breakfast 9:00 am
• As people register, they will be divided into teams; coloured arm bands to represent your team; the school will divide students into teams
• Kevin Pohl will provide hayrides
• tug of war, slooshing, toilet seat toss, snow soccer, ice carving, street hockey, chicken bowling, nail pounding, snow shoe races
• Sponsored by YAC – next meeting February 2nd at the school library 9:00 am; need volunteers
2. Community Theatre – Dinner Theatre in March; 5 performances in Mortlach
3. Saskatoon Berry Festival
• SPIN Farming – Sylvie is going to do a demonstration vegetable garden plot this summer and will do workshops at SBF
• Deb Greening from Sask. Tourism suggested that we change our passport to booklet form with map, agenda, rip out draw entry page, etc. Sylvie has talked to a printer, and has a quote of approximately @40 cents for printing depending on pages and binding. Discussion about having coupons from the businesses in the passport in place of the “stamp” – businesses were too busy and people wanting their passport stamped just increased how busy they were.
• Film Festival Status – could this be a school run project?
• Partnerships
- Besant Campground – 2 nights camping and 1 family pass to the SBF (worth $15.00) for $50.00
- Besant also paid for advertising on our page in Sask Tourism Magazine
- Temple Gardens Mineral Spa - $298.00; 2 nights (Friday and Saturday) + Family Pass to SBF
- CTV sponsorship
• Penny Cumming has volunteered to do the parade – she will need volunteer help that day
• We need a Kids Games Coordinator – jumping castle, horses, burrowing owl
• Music – Ron is starting to get bands in place
• Survey - Sylvie reminded us of “where” people attending last year were from
4. Term of Office – Constitution states that term of office for Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer is 2 years
Motion Ron that the Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer carry on until after SBF and that we do the
change over for these 3 officers in August 2009; Ray seconded; carried.
5. Walking Tour Booklet
Motion Sylvie that we develop a Walking Tour Booklet of Historical Sites in Mortlach;
Sandi Seconded; carried
6. Photo Op Placards
Motion Sylvie that MCDAS pay $250.00 to Steve and Sandi to use to buy plywood and paint to create
photo op placards related to SBF promotional material; Rose seconded; carried.
7. Event Coordinator Training – thru Sask. Tourism; training is done online; young adult; to help with
organizing SBF
Motion Sylvie that MCDAS set aside funds, not to exceed $295. 00 + gst, for training and certification
of an Events Coordinator through the Sask Tourism program; Sandi seconded; carried.
8. Communities in Bloom Budget
Motion Sandi to enter Mortlach in the Communities in Bloom Competition 2009; Carolyn seconded;
carried.
9. Mayor’s Business Breakfast – Moose Jaw Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a Business Breakfast
February 11 at Heritage Inn Moose Jaw
10. Furnace for Crocus Ridge Gallery – request to apply the $1200.00 rent payable to MCDAS be
applied to the cost of a new replacement furnace for the Gallery; tabled to February
11. FYI – MRAA was nominated to be awarded Moose Jaw Group of the year 2008.
12. Focus on Trade Booth – promote Mortlach, businesses, and SBF; tabled until February meeting

7. Pioneer Machinery – buried in the snow, sign to put up in the spring, looking for a very very old
tractor – ie one on steel
