February 22, 2009

Mortlach Saskatoonberry Festival Sat. July 4, 2009

NEWS IN BRIEF

Welcome to our first Saskatoonberry Festival ‘update’ of the season;

a.) Sponsors: We are happy to pass on that we will once again be supported by our most generous sponsors CTV, Goldenwest Radio, Prairie Berries- and more.

b.) We are also pleased to report that Verne Reese will be giving Antique Appraisals at the festival! Vern charges $10 for one or $25 for three evaluations.

c.) A very popular feathered friend, the Saskatchewan Burrowing Owl, is returning and this year will be found inside photoArtcanada gallery during the day.

d.) There will be two beginner SPIN Farming demonstrations on learning how to make some cash by market gardening in your (or someone else’s) backyard.

e.) A short locally made film about a very colourful Mortlach fellow named Casey Jones will be shown throughout the day; Casey Jones collected thousands of artifacts in the area and he also was a painter.

f.) We encourage folks to hurry up to Shand Greenhouse’s table and pick up a free Green Ash tree seedling.

g.) Our parade was fantastic last year- why doesn’t your group be part of this year’s?

h.) We are still accepting local folks ages 15-25 to be Musician Handlers. Call Ron 355-2236

i.) Vendor booths are $30 for regular, and $100 for food vendors; call Rhonda soon 355-2553

j.) This year we have partnered with Besant Campground and Temple Gardens Mineral Spa for some weekend accommodation packages! Tell your friends! See our website: www.mortlach.ca

The purple fruit of brainstorming....

Our poster (the young girl with purple teeth- see our website!) is receiving rave reviews. A talented woman in our village took the photo and made the ad - her daughter with the beautiful face ( & teeth) is the model.

The phrase ‘2500 people with purple teeth can’t be wrong” popped out of Royce Pettyjohn from Fort Walsh during a brainstorming session at a ‘Trade Ready’ workshop. The workshop was sponsored by Sask Tourism in Oct 2008 and helped evolve this festival in important ways.

The idea for the festival is a result of brainstorming between Teresa Johannesma-Wood of the Mortlach Sweet Shoppe and Sandy Purdy of Prairie Berries in 2007.

Brainstorming produces great fruit!
