Agriculture is the priimary industry in the RM of Wheatlands - cereals, oils, pulses, livestock and livestock feed. The Coteau Hills to the south drop to the plains of rich earth used for growing crops and expand northward through sandier land which are used for hay and pasture.
The RM is governed by the Reeve and six councilors, all elected officials. Elaine Salikin is the RM Administrator. Several officials are employed by the RM to grade the roads and mow the grass alongside 220 miles of RM roads. Phone 306-355-2233 Fax 306-355-2351
Rural Municipality of Wheatlands #163
The RM of Wheatlands includes the village of Mortlach and the hamlet of Parkbeg. The Trans Canada, Conoco, South Saskatchewan and Trans Gas Pipeline run through the RM. A fibre optics communication cable also runs throught the centre of the municipality. The assessment of the municipality is $44 million.
Besant Park is located just east of the municipality and is a lovely retreat in the summer and the host of numerous weekend activities then as well.
There are two larger industries in or near the RM. Young's Seeds is a large seed cleaning plant on the south side and close to the north is Haukaas Manufacturing which designs and manufacturers agricultural implements.
The area is home to whitetail and mule deer, antelope and waterfowl - which attract hunters from all over North America. Elk and moose also pass through the area.

Emergency Preparedness
To activate all emergency services call 911.
This is for fire, police and ambulance. Please be aware not all houses have numbers and not all streets are marked. Those living outside town should have their legal land description beside their phone for easy reference if needed. The fire station closest to us is Caronport, about 18 km to the east.
Response time for ambulance service is at least 30 minutes; First Responders are community members trained in first aid and they may be the first to arrive to assist in emergency. Call Cheryl Searle for more information about First Responders 306-355-2791.
Mortlach takes care to be a clean and garbage free village; every Friday morning our large garbage containers, that were rolled to the curbside, are picked up by automated garbage truck.
Every spring and fall, a large container is placed by the rink and residents are encouraged to load anything and everything into it (except tires). Leaves and brush can be deposited in the brush pile to the west of the rink. (Please, nothing but tree parts and grass clippings in this pile). Burning is not allowed by residents, anywhere in the village, anytime.
